On July 2, 2026, Executive Vice President (Global Initiatives) Shinji Kaneko of Hiroshima University (HU), paid a courtesy visit to the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST), where he met with President Tumurpurev Namnan, Vice President for Development Policy and Digital Transformation Badmaanyambuu Ranjil, and other senior university officials.

MUST is one of Mongolia's leading universities in science and engineering education, particularly in the fields of engineering, information science, architecture, resources, and energy. MUST and HU have concluded a university-level international exchange agreement, and MUST is also an important partner in the implementation of Mongolia's Presidential Scholarship Program, "ILGEELT-2100."

During the meeting, the two universities introduced their respective strengths in education and research as well as their internationalization initiatives, and discussed future directions for collaboration, including joint research and student and researcher exchanges, particularly in science and engineering fields. They also confirmed their commitment to leveraging the respective strengths of both universities to foster highly skilled professionals in science and engineering who can contribute to Mongolia's industrial development.

The participants also exchanged views on the 22 students from the inaugural cohort of the ILGEELT-2100 program whom HU has been hosting since July 2026. Prior to coming to Japan, the students received Japanese language education at MUST. Executive Vice President Kaneko expressed his appreciation to the faculty and staff of MUST for providing the students with high-quality Japanese language education and attentive support in preparation for their studies in Japan. The two universities also reaffirmed their commitment to continuing close cooperation in supporting these students, who were selected from across Mongolia, so that they can deepen their knowledge and experience through their studies at HU and contribute to Mongolia's future development.

The visit was part of a series of discussions with the Mongolian government and leading universities in the country and provided an important opportunity to further advance academic exchange between HU and Mongolia. Building on its longstanding cooperative relationship with MUST, HU will continue to further promote educational and research exchanges and the development of highly skilled professionals in science and engineering, while deepening its international partnerships and contributing to the sustainable development of both Japan and Mongolia.

ILGEELT-2100 is a four-year-and-nine-month scholarship program administered by the Office of the President of Mongolia. The program sends outstanding high school graduates to universities overseas with the aim of providing them with opportunities to study at leading universities around the world. To date, more than 756 students have enrolled at universities in 18 countries, while 315 students studied in preparatory programs at the National University of Mongolia and MUST during the 2024–2025 academic year. In addition, 86% of the participants in the 2023 cohort went on to study in engineering and technology-related fields. The program is a national initiative aimed at developing highly skilled professionals in science and engineering who will play a key role in Mongolia's future. After graduation, students are required to return to Mongolia and work in the country for five years in accordance with Mongolia's long-term development policy, "Vision 2050."
