1949
Under the Act on Establishment of National Schools (Act No. 150 of 1949), Hiroshima University was established on May 31, 1949, by integrating Hiroshima University of Literature and Science (including affiliated research institutes), Hiroshima High School, Hiroshima Higher Technical School, Hiroshima Higher Normal School, Hiroshima Women's Higher Normal School, Hiroshima Normal School, and Hiroshima Young Men's Normal School, and merging Hiroshima Municipal Higher Technical School. The new university consisted of six faculties: Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Political Science and Economics, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Science of Fisheries and Animal Sciences. The Research Institute for Theoretical Physics and a library were established as the university’s affiliated units, and the Marine Biological Laboratory was established as a unit affiliated with the Faculty of Science. The number of staff to be assigned to Hiroshima University was determined to be 1,309.

Mamoru Sakurai, the President of Hiroshima Women’s Higher Normal School, was assigned as a professor of Hiroshima University and appointed as the university’s acting president.
◆June 1
The procedure to open the university started.
◆July 18
The 1st entrance ceremony was held and 1,304 students were admitted.
◆September 17
The Hiroshima University Council was established under Article 11 of the Ordinance for Enforcement of the Act on Establishment of National Schools (Ministerial Ordinance No. 23 of 1949).

1950

◆March 31
Hiroshima High School was closed (under Act No. 51 of 1950).
◆April 1
An evening school (political science and economics) was established at the Faculty of Political Science and Economics (NoticeKo-Kan No. 82-7 of March 1, 1950).
◆April 19
Tatsuo Morito, the former Minister of Education, was appointed as a teaching official and assigned as the President of Hiroshima University and also assigned as the President of Hiroshima University of Literature and Science.
Mamoru Sakurai, the Dean of the Faculty of Education and the acting president of Hiroshima University of Literature and Science, was discharged from the office of acting president.
◆April 25
The 2nd entrance ceremony was held, and 1,312 students were admitted.
◆May 1
The Yasuura Branch School was relocated to Okinogamicho, Fukuyama City, merged with the Fukuyama School, and renamed Fukuyama Branch School.
◆May 13
The 1st entrance ceremony of the evening school (political science and economics) of the Faculty of Political Science and Economics was held, and 120 students were admitted.
◆September 1
A correspondence school was established at the Faculty of Education under Article 47 of the Ordinance for Enforcement of the Education Personnel Certification Act (Notice Gaku-Dai No. 1792 of September 1, 1950).
◆November 5
The university opening ceremony was held.

1951

◆March 9-12
The 1st certificate awarding ceremony (for the two-year course of the Faculty of Education) was held.
◆March 31
Hiroshima Higher Technical School, Hiroshima Normal School, and Hiroshima Young Men’s Normal School were closed (under Act No. 84 of 1951).
◆April 1
Attached Shinonome Elementary School, Attached Mihara Elementary School, Attached Shinonome Junior High School, Attached Mihara Junior High School, Attached Fukuyama Junior High School, and Attached Kindergarten were established at the Faculty of Education (Ministerial Ordinance No. 19 of 1951).
◆April 16
The 3rd entrance ceremony was held, and 1,614 students were admitted.

1952

◆March 8-13
The 2nd certificate awarding ceremony (for the two-year course of the Faculty of Education) was held.
◆March 31
Hiroshima Higher Normal School and Hiroshima Women’s Higher Normal School were closed (under Act No. 22 of 1952).
◆April 1
Attached Higashi-Senda Elementary School, Attached Higashi-Senda Junior High School, Attached Higashi-Senda Senior High School, and Attached Fukuyama Senior High School were established at the Faculty of Education (Ministerial Ordinance No. 23 of 1952).
An industrial teacher training course was established at the Faculty of Engineering.

The 4th entrance ceremony was held, and 1,432 students were admitted.

1953

◆March 18-20
The 3rd certificate awarding ceremony (for the two-year course of the Faculty of Education) was held.
◆March 25
The 1st graduation ceremony was held.
◆April 1
Graduate Schools of Hiroshima University were established (Graduate School of Letters, Graduate School of Education, and Graduate School of Science; master’s courses and doctoral courses) (under Act No. 25 of 1953, Cabinet Order No. 51 of 1953).
A training course for teachers of schools for the blind was established at the Shinonome Branch School of the Faculty of Education.
◆April 16
The 5th entrance ceremony was held, and 1,374 students were admitted.
◆May 11
The 1st admission ceremony for graduate schools was held, and 79 students were admitted.
◆August 1
The Faculty of Medicine (School of Medicine) was established (under Act No. 88 of 1953).
A farm was established as a facility affiliated with the Faculty of Science of Fisheries and Animal Sciences (under Act No. 88 of 1953).
◆October 1
The Regulations for the Hiroshima University Council (established on September 17, 1949) were abolished, and a new Hiroshima University Council was set up under Ordinance of the Ministry of Education No. 11 of 1953.

1954

◆March 19-22
The 4th certificate awarding ceremony (for the two-year course of the Faculty of Education) was held.

The 2nd graduation ceremony was held.
◆April 1
A Division of German Language and Literature was established at the Department of Letters of the Faculty of Letters.
A Division of Petrology was established at the Department of Physical Geography of the Faculty of Science.
A training course for teachers of schools for the deaf was established at the Shinonome Branch School of the Faculty of Education.
A training course for teachers of special subjects (health and physical education) was established at the Fukuyama Branch School of the Faculty of Education (Notice Bun-Dai-Kyo No. 153 of February 25, 1954).
An Advanced Course for Engineering (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial chemistry, and fermentation engineering) was established (Notice Gaku-Dai No. 163 of April 1, 1954).

The 6th entrance ceremony was held, and 1,435 students were admitted.
◆April 12
The 2nd entrance ceremony for graduate schools was held, and 89 students were admitted.
