The 2018 Autumn Term Commencement Ceremony (Graduation Ceremony) was held

On September 20th, the 2018 Autumn Term Commencement Ceremony was held at Hiroshima University Satake Memorial Hall, Higashi-Hiroshima campus. A total of 324 new graduates (32 undergraduate students, 292 graduate students) including 221 international students, received their diplomas from President Ochi at the ceremony.

In his speech, President Ochi referred to the actions and measurements taken by the university in response to the torrential rain in July. He expressed his gratitude to HU students as they coped with the situation in a positive manner when the university was busy in making a series of swift announcements including the dates for lecture cancellations and make-up classes. Following that, he mentioned the opening of “Hiroshima University Resilience Research Center” on the same day the ceremony was held, and laid out the university’s intention: while the center acting as a research hub, the university would be committed to undertaking cutting-edge inter-disciplinary research on disaster science.

As for how to tackle the issues including the torrential rain disaster of which solutions are not readily available, President Ochi first quoted an English critic Gilbert Keith Chesterton who said, “One can make the future luxuriant and gigantic, so long as one is thinking about the past” followed by the saying of Confucius “Onko-Chisin,” meaning “Visiting the old provides insight into the new.” By quoting these, he encouraged the graduates to examine their forerunners’ footsteps that would give them all the will to blaze a new trail.
