HU opens new training facility on radiation disaster medicine

Hiroshima University (HU) held a ceremony to commemorate the inauguration of the Radiation Disaster Medical Training Building on July 14, 2022.

Commissioner Nobuhiko Ban of the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA); Director Akira Nitta of the Radiation Protection Policy Planning Division, Radiation Protection Department; Director Shunichi Yamashita of the Advanced Radiation Emergency Medical Support Center of the National Institutes of Quantum Science and Technology (QST), and other related parties attended the ceremony.

Signboard unveiling and ribbon-cutting ceremonies were also held in front of the entrance of the Radiation Disaster Medical Training Building before the inauguration.

On behalf of the organizers, HU President Mitsuo Ochi expressed his gratitude to the guests and other related personnel. He also conveyed his wish to fulfill the role of HU as a national university located in the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima to improve the medical system for radiation disasters in Japan.

NRA Commissioner Ban commented on the importance of human resource development during his congratulatory speech.

“Human resource development is the key. I hope the new facility will nurture the next generation of human resources who can take leadership,” said Ban.

Director Yamashita of QST's Advanced Radiation Emergency Medical Support Center also spoke about the importance of the role played by HU in his congratulatory address.

A video introducing the history of the Radiation Disaster Medical Support Center and the facilities of the new training building was displayed for all attendees.

At the end of the ceremony, Dr. Kenji Kamiya, director of the Center, thanked everyone involved and expressed his determination that faculty and staff members will do their utmost to further enhance the nuclear disaster medical care system by making maximum use of the new facilities.

After the ceremony, NRA Commissioner Ban gave a tour of the first and second floors of the training building.

In the future, HU will continue to work on human resource development by providing training on nuclear disaster medical care and other programs for core personnel at the building. In addition, HU will implement the Regional Nuclear Disaster Medical Cooperation Promotion Council and cooperate with local governments and Nuclear Emergency Core Hospitals to provide comprehensive support in establishing a viable nuclear disaster medical system that can respond to any accident that may occur.
