A Hiroshima University (HU) student placed 3rd in the 49th Annual All Japan Intercollegiate English Oratorical Contest for the Okuma Trophy held at Waseda University on December 28, 2022.

The student, Yui Mikuma, is in her junior year at the School of Education's English Language and Culture Education Program.

The competition — one of the three major speech contests in Japan — received numerous entries from English Speaking Societies (ESS) at universities all over the country. Only 10 students passed the script screening and participated in the finals.

Mikuma, a member of HU's ESS, delivered a speech titled "Housework Is Lifework," in which she discussed the importance of housework and presented a new way to see and deal with it.

“I am truly honored to have won 3rd place in such a prestigious contest. I owe a great deal to the professors who readily offered selfless support all the way from the draft writing through the practice. I would also like to express my gratitude to the members of the ESS for their warm support and encouragement. I will continue to strive to improve my English and public speaking skills, making the best use of this invaluable experience," said Mikuma.
