Town & Gown Innovation Challenge (Challenge Provider: Chugoku Seira Co., Ltd.) Award Ceremony Held

On October 18, 2024, the award ceremony for the Town & Gown Innovation Challenge (Challenge Provider: Chugoku Seira Co., Ltd.) was held in the conference room on the 4th floor of the Headquarters Building.

For this Innovation Challenge, four teams comprising 18 students, including international students, participated. They explored and proposed solutions to the challenge provided by Chugoku Seira Co., Ltd., which focused on the utilization of metal scrap generated from metal nut manufacturing. Following a rigorous evaluation, the award for excellence was presented to a group of four students from the School of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Depgartment of Integrated Global Studies:

  • Hong Shiming
  • Tanaka Mitsuki
  • Zhang Haoqian
  • Zou Mingyang

This initiative was conducted as a practical educational program under the Town & Gown Initiative, jointly promoted by Hiroshima University and Higashihiroshima City. It utilized an inquiry-based experiential learning approach co-developed with Arizona State University, one of Hiroshima University’s partner institutions, to tackle real-world regional challenges. This was the first implementation of the initiative.

In his opening remarks, Executive Vice President for Global Initiatives, Dr. Kaneko, stated: "By expanding practical education that fosters collaboration between local governments, businesses, residents, and the university under the Town & Gown Initiative, we aim to develop talent capable of solving regional issues."

Additionally, Mr. Okumoto Matsuki, President of Chugoku Seira Co., Ltd., who attended the ceremony, commented: "I was deeply impressed by the innovative ideas from the students—ideas we had never considered before. This initiative has been highly valuable, and we are seriously considering how to implement their proposals."

One of the award recipients, Ms. Tanaka Mitsuki, shared her thoughts: "Having the opportunity to present our ideas directly to a company was an invaluable experience, and our team approached the challenge with great enthusiasm. I am delighted that our efforts resulted in this award. It was a meaningful experience that connected us to the real world."

Hiroshima University remains committed to fostering talent that can contribute to solving regional challenges through similar initiatives.
