On May 27th, 2025, Hiroshima University (HU) hosted a cultural exchange event at the multipurpose space in the HU Phoenix International Center MIRAI CREA in collaboration with companies and organizations in Hiroshima prefecture.
Originally launched in 2016, this event has provided opportunities for international students, faculty, and staff from various cultural backgrounds to connect through food, beverages, and social interaction. Now in its seventh iteration, the event welcomed approximately 200 participants, who enjoyed intercultural exchange over shared meals.
In addition to refreshments, the event featured freshly prepared okonomiyaki,– offered in both halal and vegetarian options – cooked on authentic griddles and equipment provided by General Incorporated Foundation Oconomiyaki Academy.
In addition, Yamadaya Co., Ltd. contributed "momiji-manju” (maple leaf-shaped buns filled with sweet bean paste) and "Shakushi-Senbei" (rice crackers shaped like rice paddles), both of which have a Halal certification (a certification issued by a Halal certification organization that verifies the certified products have been prepared in accordance with the Islamic precepts). Chugoku Sangyo Co., Ltd. also supported the event by providing drinking water.
In his opening remarks, President Mitsuo Ochi stated, “At Hiroshima University, we are committed to the pursuit of peace. We must think and take action to create a peaceful world, and the first step to build a peaceful world is mutual understanding of different cultures and backgrounds. I hope today’s event serves as a meaningful opportunity to foster mutual understanding among us. Please enjoy okonomiyaki and momiji-manju and take this chance to deepen friendships with one another. I also encourage you to reflect on how each of us can contribute to a peaceful world."
One of the international students who participated in the event shared their impression, saying, “I had a great time talking with many people and even making new friends in the event. The food-especially the okonomiyaki-was really delicious!”
