Hiroshima University Alumni Association Indonesia Chapter held the 3rd Seminar on "Benefits of Essential Oil”

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, the third seminar by the Indonesia Chapter of the Hiroshima University Alumni Association ("HUAA-Indonesia") was held in conjunction with Hiroshima University.

Since its establishment in March 2022 as an alumni association all over Indonesia, HUAA-Indonesia has been developing its activities in cooperation with Hiroshima University and related companies, aiming to create a new alumni association model that connects industry, academia, and government in both countries with alumni in Indonesia to form an overseas co-creation platform.

The seminar series, now on its 3rd one, which provides up-to-date information on Indonesia, has been very well received by participants in both countries.

The 3rd seminar, on the theme of "Benefits of Essential Oils", which is attracting attention in Indonesia, welcomed three speakers.  The seminar started in a friendly atmosphere, facilitated by Professor Emeritus Teruo Maeda, who has been assigned to Jakarta, and Ms. Eiko Abe, a local staff member.

First, Dr. Novi Syaftika, Secretary of HUAA-Indonesia (BRIN Researcher who completed her degree at the Graduate School of Engineering), gave an introduction of the activities of HUAA-Indonesia.

The first speaker, Dr. Yukihiro Yada, Professor of the University of Tsukuba’s School of Integrative and Global Majors, who has conducted research for a long time on the effects of fragrance and skin, explained the mental and skin care benefits of naturally-derived aromas, including the results of studies with rose oil (sedative effect, improvement of sleep quality and skin condition, etc.).

The second speaker, Dr. Dr. Sinta Murlistyarini, a dermatologist, explained the effects of essential oils on skin diseases, how to choose appropriate oil for your skin’s condition, and actual cases of improvement in trial treatments conducted in hospitals.
The last speaker, Ms. Ria Templer, CEO of Utama Spice, a global skin care company based in Bali, gave a general description of essential oils (types, ingredients, benefits, etc.), the characteristics of five typical oils (Tea Tree, Lavender, Ylang-Ylang, Chamomile, Patchouli), and how to use the oils effectively.

After the lectures, the Q&A session was a great success with many questions from 60 participants from Japanese and Indonesian companies and universities, including alumni.

This seminar series has conducted covered topics of current interest in Indonesia, such as "New Capital City" by an alumni who works for a government agency and "Food Science and Technology" by an alumni who is a researcher, and we have received many requests to hold the next seminar soon.

At the end of June, in response to requests from Indonesian students and their parents, HUAA-Indonesia is planning to hold a seminar (conducted in Indonesian) on studying in Japan (JLPT, etc.).  We hope you will follow HUAA-Indonesia's Instagram for the latest event information.
