From August 3 (Fri) to August 10 (Fri) 2012, the INU Student Seminar and the INU Master's Summer School were held in Hiroshima City and on the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus. Both of them provided forums for students to discuss various topics on "Global Citizenship and Peace" (GCP). In addition to these two programs, this year the Master’s Summer School on "Global Environmental Sustainability" (GES) was held for the first time.

This year, 10 INU (International Network of Universities) member universities from 7 countries sent 80 students and 13 faculty members/staff to the Student Seminar; 10 students and 2 faculty members to the Master’s Summer School on GCP; and 16 students and 16 faculty members to the Master’s Summer School on GES; adding up to the largest group ever since this seminar started in 2006.

The participants of Student Seminar and Master's School on GCP listened to the experiences of Mr. Keijiro Matsushima, a Hibakusha (A-bomb survivor) and visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima City. On Higashi-Hiroshima Campus they had topic-based workshops, seminars, group discussions and listened to guest lecturers to develop understanding on nuclear issues and peace.

The Master's Summer School on GES provided a balanced program that consisted of both fieldwork and lectures, country reports, group discussions and an on-board lecture/practice on Hiroshima University's Training & Research Vessel Toyoshio Maru.

On August 6th (Mon), all of the participants attended the Peace Memorial Ceremony, and those who wished to joined the optional events which consisted of lectures by the Executive Secretary of CTBTO (Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization), presentations and a tour of A-bombed trees and the city.

A Japanese student who took part in the events said: "Although I faced a lot of difficulties, there was much more to gain from the lectures, workshops, and from meeting different people. It was a truly valuable time." Another student participant from abroad said, "I didn't have much knowledge about the subject before, but everybody really helped me" and "It was an amazing experience."
