The 48th Hiroshima University Biomass Evening Seminar(The 4th Hiroshima University ACE Seminar)

Biomass Project Research Center, Hiroshima University, and HOSTY Association are co-organizing the Hiroshima University Biomass Evening Seminar. This seminar covers topics from the fundamentals of biomass to the latest information so that it can contribute the activities on biomass in this district. The 48th seminar will be held as follows. Please join.

Commentary: Yukihiko MATSUMURA (Professor, Institute of Engineering, Hiroshima University)

Chair: Obie FAROBIE (Specially Appointed Assistant Professor, Institute of Engineering HiroshimaUniversity)

◆Lecture: Tsunehiro AKI

Professor, Graduate School of Advanced Sciences of Matter, Hiroshima University

"Marine and lipid biotechnology"

We are aiming at establishing sustainable biorefinery technology to convert unused biomass such as food wastes, waste water, non-edible plants and marine macroalgae into a variety of value-added lipids including highly functional polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidative carotenoids and also hydrocarbons for fine chemicals and biofuels by marine oleaginous microbe, Aurantiochytrium, as biocatalyst.

◆Lecture: Takahisa TAJIMA

Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Advanced Sciences of Matter, Hiroshima University

"Conversion of marine biomass by psychrophile-based simple biocatalyst"

We constructed the simple biocatalyst using psychrophilic bacterium as a host microorganism expressing mesophilic reaction enzymes for bioconversion of marine biomass. This biocatalyst has some advantages in the efficient conversion because the heat treatment of the catalyst brings about the inactivation of host metabolic enzymes producing various metabolites as byproducts and the increase of membrane permeability of substrate. In this time, I will report the conversion of mannitol to fructose by psychrophile-based simple biocatalyst, and will discuss to address the high yield conversion from high concentration of mannitol.

※We will hold the discussion meeting from 18:00 (800 JPY needed). Join this meeting, too if you are available.
