This April, Dr. Ginandjar Kartasasmita, the President’s representative of the Indonesian Red Cross Society and professor of Brawijaya University, took office as the External Administrative Councilor of Hiroshima University. He made a visit to Hiroshima University for the first time on September 1 and 2. He participated in hearings and gave a speech.
As part of his assessment, Dr. Ginandjar exchanged opinions with students on both Higashi Hiroshima and Kasumi campuses and participated in a hearing with the heads of departments. He asked pointed questions about globalization awareness.
On the afternoon of September 2nd, after the Administrative Council and exchange of ideas with the directors, he gave a speech in English, titled “Prospect and Challenges of Japanese Universities in a Globalized World”.
In the speech, Dr. Ginandjar included his own experience studying abroad in Japan and pointed out that “Hiroshima University’s percentage of foreign study abroad students is 6%, which is less than half of top national universities. It is necessary to offer degree courses in English to increase international students” and “Hiroshima University help to develop creative industries that have big ripple effects on the economy. Hiroshima University should pass on these experiences to foreign students. Also, the creation of curriculums that cover a broad range of subjects such as artistic engineering, social sciences, and humanities are important.”
During the round of applause, President Mitsuo Ochi gave a letter of appreciation for the passionate speech, which was about an hour long.
