Children from the Hiroshima University Attached Kindergarten planted rice in the campus

On June 10, when the Chugoku region entered the rainy season, 25 senior children from the university attached kindergarten planted rice in the rice field (75 square meters) located in the Ecological Experiment Garden at the Higashi-Hiroshima campus.

For the rice planting, Mr. Tsuneo Shioji, a technical expert, entered the rice paddies to demonstrate the procedure and planted rice seedlings with the children. The children who were fearful about entering the rice paddies at first gradually got used to it, and eventually their lively voices, requesting to try again, echoed through the field. Children awaiting their turn for the rice planting experience were also energetic and active all the time, catching dragonfly nymphs and frogs in the vicinity of the rice fields, as well as catching small fishes in a nearby stream.

The children who had learned about how rice is made, had smiles in their faces at the end of the day, commenting that the mud felt pleasant and that they look forward to the harvesting of the crops.

This rice planting experience is held every year for older children from the university attached kindergarten, as part of the educational activities. This time, wild rice (black rice) and Japanese rice (Akiroman) was planted, and the children will also experience rice harvesting in autumn.
