The 10th Japanese Essay Speech Contest was held in Beijing



Hiroshima University Beijing Research Center held the 10th Japanese Essay Speech Contest on November 14th at Capital Normal University in Beijing, China where the research center is located.

This contest is hosted by the Beijing Research Center and it is the 10th time this contest has been held. This year marks 70 years after the atomic bombing; therefore this year’s theme is “My message−Towards a Peaceful Future”. The contest invited students from universities all over China and there were applications from 632 students from 32 universities. Universities recommended a total of 116 essays out of those applications. The eight students that won awards presented their essays in the Capital Normal University auditorium. There were about 170 people in the audience including students learning Japanese and Japanese teachers.

Masato Kitera, Japan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to China gave a welcome speech before the contest. He encouraged the contest as “promoting friendship between Japan and China, and nurturing human resources that will become a bridge between the two countries”. Special sponsor, Fukuyama Transporting Co. President and Representative Director, Shigehiro Komaru also gave a greeting, then Hiroshima University President Mitsuo Ochi’s video message was played and Hiroshima University Executive and Vice President Toshiyuki Sato gave a greeting.

Former Vice Director of Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China Liu Deyou gave a special lecture, “What I experienced through civilian exchanges”. Then, the students that won awards gave their speech. Not only did the students express their messages of peace fluently in Japanese, but they also answered questions from the audience. After severe reviewing, Jin Zhaoyan from Renmin University of China was chosen as first place.

The contest concluded with Japanese announcer, Ms. Keiko Takahashi from China Radio International, giving comments from an announcer’s point of view. The audience listened intently until the very end of the contest.
