The International Network of Universities (INU), composed of 12 member universities from 9 countries, and Hiroshima University held the 2007 INU Student Seminar on Peace and Climate Change in Hiroshima City and at the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus from Sunday, August 5 to Friday, August 10.

Participants included 23 students and 13 faculty and staff from universities abroad, as well as 36 students from Hiroshima University and Ritsumeikan University (among those were 15 international students from our university). On August 5 and 6, the students visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and participated in the Peace Memorial Ceremony in Hiroshima City; as well, they also heard a lecture from an atomic bomb survivor at the Higashi-Senda Campus of our university and enjoyed a Welcome Reception. From August 7 to 10, participants heard lectures from the former Mayor of Hiroshima, Mr. Takashi Hiraoka, the Director of the UNITAR Hiroshima Office, Dr. Nassrine Azimi, Dr. Thomas Weber of La Trobe University, and Professor Hajime Nishitani, of the Graduate School of Social Sciences at Hiroshima University. Outside of the lectures, students also participated in group discussions on topics such as Sovereignty and Global Governance, Choosing Energy Options, Ethics - Consumerism/ Materialism, and held a Mock UN comprised of 8 country groups and 1 region group.

At the Mock UN, held on the final day of the seminar, the students actively exchanged opinions in the voice of their assigned countries and region regarding how to deal with global warming on a global and local level, and concluded that the use of renewable energy sources must be mandatory and that compensation for forest protection must be devised for developing nations.

The seminar was held last year, and the university plans to hold it again next year at the same time in Hiroshima.
