The International Center of Hiroshima University holds several events with the purpose of supporting interaction between Japanese and International students through experiencing culture and nature etc.. This year, we plan to hold these international exchange events together with the members of ECO-NET Higashi-Hiroshima, a group, that plans to develop measures against global warming within the framework of the Hiroshima University Community Cooperation Propulsion Project 2011 B-9, "Reduce CO2 emission by change to green lifestyle for Hiroshima University Students!!."
On June 4th (Sat.) at 10 AM, the first of these events was held. 13 international students, 7 Japanese students and 7 members of ECO-NET Higashi-Hiroshima - altogether 27 people - gathered in front of the International House. The made a green curtain and a vegetable field, and the International and Japanese students deepened exchanges.
After introducing themselves in Japanese and English, the students planted goya, Japanese morning glory and loofah into planters and installed a pole and a net to make a green curtain. Then, they spread fertilizer in the 10 m2 field, plowed it and planted grape tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, small size green pepper, okras, corn and peanuts etc., 18 seedlings, into three ridges.
There were also courses about growth of plants and producing compost by garbage, and we hope, that the students could understand the natural environment through hands-on learning and that the research of the world’s garbage and food situation would help to deepen global understanding between Japanese and International students and promote their accommodating view towards natural environment.
