On April 25, 2013, an assistant professor of the Graduate School of Engineering in Hiroshima University, Dr.Ichiro Ario, and his team conducted the development briefing session of the emergency and deployment temporal bridge (mobile bridge) system, and its open experiment in Fukuyama city, Hiroshima.

In order to realize quicker disaster recovery, Dr.Ario has collaborated in researching and developing this MobilebridgeTM project with Hoshikei Co.Ltd., Japan Construction Method and Machinery Research Institute, Akashin Co. Ltd. and Sankyo Tateyama Inc. The team recently completed the bridge with the hydraulic system which is prepared for assumed disaster site.

What makes this new type of bridge different from the conventional bridge is that this new bridge secures its expanding function and stiffness by the structure with which main structural members were chained by shape of “X”. As a bridge, it is the first structure in the world, and this bridge interlocks with a slab deck in its expansion. Full length of the bridge is about 20.8 meters and a vehicle can pass through it.

This bridge can be constructed by work from one way of a cantilever beam and it takes about 10 to 15 minutes by two persons to be an urgent route for people transporting to and from disaster site at the time of the natural disaster. Moreover, the team attained its weight saving by using an aluminum alloy for most part of the bridge. Dr.Ario said that he and his team would repeat further experiment and improvement towards practical use in the future.
