On September 9th, Hiroshima University concluded an Academic Exchange Agreement with the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Last April, a delegation of our university visited Sao Paulo and negotiated an agreement. The talks were successful and resulted in the signing.

The University of Sao Paulo is the highest-performing university representing Latin America. After the signing of the agreement, Executive and Vice President Tetsuji Okamoto and the Vice-Rector for International Relations of University of Sao Paulo Adnei held a meeting and discussed the future of the academic educational exchange between the two universities. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of the Japanese Consul General in Sao Paulo, Mr. Kazuaki Obe, and Professor Masato Ninomiya from the Faculty of Law in the University of Sao Paulo.

Furthermore, on September 17th, the date was selected to coincide with the signing ceremony, the Hiroshima University Academic Seminar was held at the Brazil Hiroshima Culture Center in Sao Paulo City. This event was organized by the Hiroshima University Brazil Center, established last May. Executive and Vice President Tetsuji Okamoto gave a lecture, “Medical support in the areas around the former Soviet Union nuclear-testing site of Semipalatinsk in the Republic of Kazakhstan.” while the Director of the International Center Toshiyuki Sato spoke on “The Words of Confucius”. Although it was a weekday, more than fifty people attended the seminar and during the gathering after the seminar, the participants had a lively exchange of views about the content of the lectures. There were also many questions from students interested in overseas education at Hiroshima University.

We hope that the signing of the agreement with the University of Sao Paulo and the activities of the Hiroshima University Brazil Center will increase the exchange of international students and researchers from Brazil, and develop collaborative research and other academic educational exchange.
