(2020.4.21)About the cancellation of in-person classes for the 1st term

To all students and staff,

About the cancellation of in-person classes for the 1st term

April 21, 2020
Makoto Miyatani,
Executive Vice President (Education)

Hiroshima University issued the “Policy regarding the classes of the 2020 Spring Semester (1st and 2nd term)” on April 3 and announced plans to start in-person (face-to-face) classes on May 7 (Thurs) after the consecutive holidays ended.

However, considering the current situation in which the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Japan is getting worse, Hiroshima University finds it difficult to start its in-person classes as scheduled, and therefore has decided to cancel all the in-person classes for the 1st term and conduct only online classes. Regarding the schedule for the 2nd term starting from Tuesday June 16, we will notify you as soon as we make a decision in light of the circumstances at the end of May.

As you may know, the national state of emergency based on the Act on Special Measures expanded to all of Japan on April 16. Although Hiroshima prefecture has not yet been designated as a "specific warning prefecture", the number of cases is increasing, and “Hiroshima Prefecture Infection Spread Alert” was issued by the Hiroshima prefectural governor on April 13, followed by the “10 requests to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus” issued by the Higashihiroshima city mayor, asking all the residents to stay indoors both on weekdays and weekends. Moreover, Hiroshima prefecture issued an emergency policy on April 18 asking many facilities including universities to temporarily suspend their business activities from April 22.

Although we are enduring this hard time due to the current situation, we hope that all students and staff of Hiroshima University will stick together and make every effort to bring our lives back to normal as quickly as possible.

Students who may be worried or anxious about classes and everyday life, please feel free to consult your tutors, supervisors, staff of the student support office in charge of your school/graduate school , “Help Desk for all your problems”(E-mail:gakusei-senmon@office.hiroshima-u.ac.jp), or the Health Service Center
