HU accepted two remote research internship students from the University of Chicago (US)

The Hiroshima University Global Research Internship Program(GRIP)is a program that accepts students from top-level US universities and offers about eight weeks of research internship opportunity under a HU mentor/laboratory.

In AY2016, HU accepted its first internship student from Harvard University and since the program was fully launched in AY2018, a total of 19 students from Harvard University, University of Chicago and Arizona State University have participated in the internship program at HU.

In AY2020, due to the current continuous status of COVID-19 around the world, HU decided to cancel the visit to Japan and provide an alternative opportunity. Two students from the University of Chicago were given a remote internship opportunity from July to August under Prof. Takio Kurita, Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering.
The interns worked on a project about machine learning, interacting with HU students online through seminars and an international exchange event. They also held an online report conference (as can be seen in the above image) on August 18th.

After the internship program, Prof. Kurita commented, “Through weekly online progress reports, HU students were really inspired by the intern students’ posture to work positively on the project and also through witnessing them progress rapidly.” He also evaluated that this remote internship program increased HU students’ interest in international exchange and their desire to study.
