HU law students take encouragement prize in international moot court competition

The team of Hiroshima University law students

A team of Hiroshima University law students bagged the Soongsil's Spirit Award during the East Asian Regional Rounds (EARR) of the STETSON International Environmental Moot Court Competition held from November 17 to 21 last year.

The event hosted by Soongsil University College of Law in South Korea was held online via Zoom due to the coronavirus pandemic. Thirteen teams from Russia, China, South Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Nepal, and Taiwan participated in the EARR. The teams competed in a tournament-style English-language debate on the theme of "Protection of Bats and International Trade Measures."

Two teams from HU's School of Law joined in this year's competition. Participating in the three preliminary rounds were Kohei Hamada (4th year), Takumi Kamiko (4th year), and Tokino Ohashi (4th year) as Team A, and Tatsuya Hasuo (4th year) and Mitsuru Oba Francis (3rd year) as Team B. Team B received the Soongsil's Spirit Award.

Soongsil's Spirit Award

Professor Hajime Nishitani of the HU School of Law also gave a presentation in English on "Legal Education and International Exchange in the With/Post-Corona Era” at the 10th Godang International Conference on Law, which was held together with the competition. The conference's theme was "Law and Environment in the Post-Pandemic Era." It was attended by researchers from the US, China, Korea, and the UK.

The EARR is held every year at Soongsil University in Korea, and the HU School of Law is planning to invite participants to attend next year.
