Cherry blossoms start to bloom on Higashi-Hiroshima campus

Flower of Kanzakura

The middle of February was greeted on campus with the opening up of cherry blossoms belonging to the same species as the Kanzakura (winter cherry blossoms) found at Kaita-Ichi Station — which are among the first to bloom in Hiroshima Prefecture.

The remontant Kobukuzakura and Shikizakura have also started to bloom near the former Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation building and near the West No. 2 parking lot.

As of the end of 2017, a total of 1,300 cherry trees from 78 species have been planted on the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus, the third-largest national university campus in Japan at approximately 250 hectares. Every spring, students, staff, and many visitors to the campus enjoy the cherry blossoms.

The "Hiroshima University Cherry Blossom Mandala," which can be found on the Digital Natural History Museum of Hiroshima University website, provides information on the blooming of the cherry blossoms on campus every year, along with photos taken by members of the Higashi-Hiroshima Botanical Garden and volunteer students from the university.
