HU welcomes new students at 2022 Autumn Entrance Ceremony

Hiroshima University (HU) welcomed 298 new students ― of which 264 are international students ― at its 2022 Autumn Entrance Ceremony on Saturday, October 1.

The event was held at the Satake Memorial Hall on the Higashi-Hiroshima campus.

On the same day, the Morito Institute of Global Higher Education 3+1 Program held an opening ceremony at HU's administration bureau building, welcoming 90 new students from overseas.

In his ceremonial address, President Ochi talked about two crises the world is now facing: the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.

President Ochi explained how HU — established in the A-bombed city of Hiroshima — is a university that seeks and engages in activities for peace such as accepting students from Ukraine and providing humanitarian assistance to former international students from Afghanistan.

“At Hiroshima University, a wide range of opportunities is available to help you maximize your potential. However, it is up to each and every one of you to open the doors to these opportunities. In the process, please remember to think about the whys and the hows. Of course, HU faculty and administrative members do their utmost to work together to support you, so that you will feel ‘glad to have studied at Hiroshima University,’” said President Ochi to the new students.
