HU's 10-year, 11 billion yen proposal, selected for JST's 'Support for Pioneering Research Initiated by the Next Generation,' will support 379 students annually

Hiroshima University (HU) has been selected as an implementing organization for the Japan Science and Technology Agency’s (JST) “Support for Pioneering Research Initiated by the Next Generation” program. Beginning in AY 2024, the university will support 379 students annually, surpassing the current assistance provided to 358 individuals under the Hiroshima University Postgraduate Advancement Project.

Under this initiative, each selected doctoral student will receive annual research support funding of 2.28 to 2.4 million yen (equivalent to living expenses) and 400,000 yen for research expenses. The aims of this program are: 1) to support doctoral students in conducting free, challenging, and interdisciplinary research without being confined to existing frameworks, 2) to create an environment where students can dedicate themselves to research by providing living expenses, and 3) to cultivate doctoral talents who can excel not only in academia but also in industries, thereby contributing to “science, technology, and innovation in Japan.”

To all undergraduate and master's degree students, whether at HU or elsewhere, and to high school students: Join us in pursuing doctoral studies at HU and together, let's shape the future of Japan! HU is rooting for you!

Our university has been carrying out the “Program for Developing and Supporting the Next-Generation of Innovative Researchers at Hiroshima University” since AY 2021. This program aims to provide a supportive environment for doctoral students to concentrate on their research; contribute to the future of science, technology, and innovation in Japan; and nurture students who will play a crucial role in shaping the world's future. Following this recent selection, HU will continue to promote the program to support even more students.

This program leverages our university's distinctive strengths across various disciplines, including humanities and social sciences, to foster interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers and students. We aim to cultivate individuals who will advance science, technology, and innovation, in line with Japan’s vision of the future society — Society 5.0. Selected doctoral students will receive financial support for living expenses and research expenses, along with opportunities to study at overseas research institutions, acquire transferable skills, and various initiatives for career development and growth.

We have also established “HU SPRING,” a place for students to interact and collaborate beyond their own areas of expertise, and to discuss how to approach solving social issues and achieving world peace.

Through this program and other support systems, HU will create an environment where students can concentrate on their research and contribute to the creation of science, technology, and innovation in Japan.

*Note: The proposal from our university plans for a 10-year total of 11 billion yen, and it does not imply that the JST “Support for Pioneering Research Initiated by the Next Generation” has allocated a budget for 10 years.
