On the morning of August 5, what appears to be an unexploded ordnance from World War II was once again discovered at a construction site on the Kasumi Campus. It was safely removed by the police at 2:20 p.m. on the same day.
We sincerely apologize for the concern and inconvenience caused to local residents and others, and we would like to express our deepest respect and gratitude to all the relevant authorities involved in the removal and related operations.
Before the war, the site of the current campus housed the former Hiroshima Army Ordnance Supply Depot, which stored weapons and ammunition. After the atomic bombing, it was used as a first-aid station. The discovery of another unexploded ordnance, following the one on May 13, serves as a stark reminder of the deep scars that war has left on Hiroshima. It deepens our awareness of the preciousness of peace and strengthens our sense of responsibility to carry its lessons into the future.
As we approach the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing, Hiroshima University—founded in the A-bombed city as a university for peace—reaffirms its commitment to learning from history, sharing the value of peace with the world, and moving forward together with the local community.
