New Department Approved: The Department of Integrated Global Studies at the School of Integrated Arts and Sciences is To Be Opened at Hiroshima University in April 2018

On 16th August 2017, the MEXT accepted the establishment report concerning the opening of the Department of Integrated Global Studies at the School of Integrated Arts and Sciences at Hiroshima University, which means now it is official that the department is to be established in April 2018 (H30). Initially, the recruitment of students for the new department was announced during the open campus days on 17th and 18th August 2017, which will be followed by full-blown operations for recruiting students from Japan and overseas countries.

As for the admission quota, the Department of Integrated Global Studies will accept 40 students per year. The students are expected to study integrated liberal arts subjects, which enables them to improve their skills to clarify a wide range of global issues or problems and seek their solutions. The official language at the department is English, and home students and international students will study together.

With specialized subjects, the students’ learning experiences center around the following three themes: “Culture and Tourism”, “Peace and Communication”, and “Environment and Society”. In the second half of the semester, all the second-year home students are required to participate study-abroad programs for about six months.

The Department of Integrated Global Studies intends to cultivate “peace-pursuing, cultured individuals with an international mindset and a challenging spirit” as the hub of promoting globalization at Hiroshima University.
