HU’s proposal adopted by JST’s 'BOOST: Program for Developing the Next-Generation AI Researchers' to support 21 doctoral students

Hiroshima University (HU) has been selected as an implementing institution for the “Broadening Opportunities for Outstanding young researchers and doctoral students in STrategic areas (BOOST): Program for Developing the Next-Generation AI Researchers,” conducted by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Beginning in AY 2024, HU will support seven students per year — a total of 21 doctoral students over a period of three years.

This initiative, focusing on the urgent national strategic area of next-generation AI, aims to support doctoral students engaged in research and development contributing to this field (including both AI and emerging/converging areas within AI) by providing sufficient living expenses (support funds) and research funds. By nurturing students with the ambition and capability to pioneer and lead in the next-generation AI field, the goal is to strengthen the researcher base in this national strategic area, thereby enhancing innovation creation and industrial competitiveness.

As an implementing institution, HU will establish the “Program for Developing and Supporting the Next-Generation AI Researchers at Hiroshima University,” focusing on AI and emerging/converging areas within AI as its core, leveraging the university's distinctive specific fields and interdisciplinary comprehensive capabilities including humanities and social sciences. The aim is to foster talent who will contribute to realizing Japan's future society (Society 5.0) by overcoming societal challenges through various AI applications, including but not limited to image recognition, natural language processing, speech processing, and prediction, while also embracing forthcoming advancements in AI technology.

Under this initiative, each selected doctoral student will receive an annual support fund of 3 million yen (equivalent to living expenses) and 900,000 yen for research expenses. Additionally, selected students will have the opportunity to participate in “HU SPRING,” an emergent space for interdisciplinary interaction and collaboration established under the “Program for Developing and Supporting the Next-Generation of Innovative Researchers at Hiroshima University.” Here they can enhance their transferable skills and receive support for career development, reflecting the university's distinctive characteristics.

Through this program and other support systems, HU will create an environment where students can concentrate on their research and contribute to the creation of science, technology, and innovation in Japan.
