Extent of Casualties and Property Damages of HU Students, Administrative Staff, Faculty, and Their Families (As of 31st July)

1. HU Administrative Staff, Faculty, and Their Families:

  • Number of the deceased: 1 (family members)
  • Number of the injured: 1 (family members)
  • Number of households that incurred property damage/losses, inundation, power cuts, disrupted water supply etc.: 70
  • Number of households evacuated to shelters: 5

2. HU Students and Their Families:

  • Number of the deceased: 0
  • Number of the injured: 0

1. HU Administrative Staff, Faculty, and Their Families:

  • Number of the deceased: 1
  • Number of the injured: 1
  • Number of households that incurred property damage/losses, inundation, power cuts, disrupted water supply etc.: 65
  • Number of households evacuated to shelters: 5

2. HU Students and Their Families:

  • Number of the deceased: 0
  • Number of the injured: 0
  • Number of households that incurred property damage/losses, inundation, power cuts, disrupted water supply etc.: 47
  • Number of households evacuated to shelters: 2

Extent of Other Damage to Properties

[Damage in and around the university premises]

  • Landslides on the north and south sides of the Hiroshima University Kindergarten;
    The mud has been removed. Temporary walls to guard against the mud are expected to be built.
  • A landslide occurred on the east side of the Gagara Faculty Housing (Building No. 1);
    The mud was removed and the road has been reopened. Temporary walls to guard against the mud are expected to be built.
  • Muddy water flowed into Roppo Gakuen premises;
    The mud has been removed.
  • Muddy water has flowed into the vicinity of the Ikenoue Student Dormitory and Yamanaka Ike;
    The mud has been removed, and the road suspension way around the area has been reopened.
  • The side of the pedestrian/bicycle path beside the Central Library and Satake Memorial Hall has partially collapsed;
    The path has been closed. It is expected to reopen in August.
  • Muddy water has flowed into near the entrance gate of the Marine Biological Laboratory, Graduate School of Science (Mukaijima);
    The mud on the roadway has been removed, and the roadway has been reopened.
  • The roadway that leads to the Graduate School of Science Miyajima Natural Botanical Garden has collapsed in two sites;
    Emergency measures are being implemented. Only side of the road is passable.

[Other Damage]

  • The optical fibers used for HU campus network are possibly in danger of being cut off due to the collapsing of the National Highway Route 2. (in the total of four sites in Nakano-higashi and Kami-Seno areas in danger);
    In the two areas above, redirection work of the affected optical fibers has been completed. Further restoration work will be followed (Date still undecided).

Apart from the above, there has been no changes with the update since July 17th.

  • Number of households that incurred property damage/losses, inundation, power cuts, disrupted water supply etc.: 39

2. HU Students and Their Families:

  • Number of the injured: 0
  • Number of households that incurred property damage/losses, inundation, power cuts, water outage etc.: 23

Extent of Other Damage to Properties

1. Damage to the Campus Buildings

  • The basement of the Environmental Research and Management Center was inundated with muddy water;
    The muddy water has been completely drained, and wastewater containing the tertiary level rinsing water or above, has been connected to the public sewage system.

2. Damage in and around the university premises

  • Landslides occurred on the south and north sides of Hiroshima University Kindergarten brought a large volume of muddy water to the sidewalk and roadway along the Boulevard;
    The mud on the roadway has been removed, and the mud on the sidewalk is being removed by Higashihiroshima municipal government.
  • A landslide occurred on the east side of the Gagara Faculty Housing (Building No. 1) brought muddy water that washed through the Gagara Road;
    The mud was removed and the road has been reopened.
  • Muddy water flowed into Roppo Gakuen premises;
    The mud is being removed.
  • Muddy water has flowed into the vicinity of the Ikenoue Student Dormitory and Yamanaka Ike;
    The roadway around this area has been reopened.
  • The side of the pedestrian/bicycle path beside the Central Library and Satake Memorial Hall has partially collapsed;
    The path has been closed. The methods of restoration work are being considered.
  • The slope on the east side of the School of Integrated Arts and Sciences Building has partially collapsed (as in the Image 1);
    Entry into the area is forbidden.
  • The fence and concrete block wall beside the swimming pool in the premises of Mihara Attached School has partially collapsed (as in the Image 2);
    Entry into the area is forbidden.
  • Muddy water has flowed into near the entrance gate of the Marine Biological Laboratory, Graduate School of Science (Mukaijima) (as in the Image 3);
    The mud on the roadway is being removed by Hiroshima prefectural government.
  • The roadway that leads to the Graduate School of Science Miyajima Natural Botanical Garden has collapsed in two areas (as in the Image 4);
    Only one side of the road is passable.

3. Damage to Machinery and Equipment

  • The underground drainage pump, control panel, and private power generator at the Environmental Research and Management Center were inundated with muddy water;
    They are being checked whether or not they are in working condition.

4. Other damage

  • The optical fibers used for HU campus network are possibly in danger of being cut off due to the collapsing of the National Highway Route 2. (in the total of four sites in Nakano-higashi and Kami-Seno areas in danger);
    On July 13th, work for redirecting the optical fibers was completed in Nakano-higashi area. On July 18th, redirecting the affected fibers are to be conducted in Kami-Seno area.

As of July 9th, 2018

1) Casualties

As of July 9th 2018, the safety confirmation system of the university shows that there has been no report of any casualties of the students, faculty and administrative members at Hiroshima University.

2) Other Damage to the Properties

[Higashi-Hiroshima campus]

  • The basement of the Environmental Research and Management Center, where tanks and a private power generator are installed, was inundated with muddy water, which made the center’s water treatment system inoperative. (Image 1)
  • The side of the pedestrian/bicycle path beside the Central Library and Satake Memorial Hall has partially collapsed. (Image 2)
  • A landslide originated from the hill located at the back of the Hiroshima University Kindergarten has brought a large volume of muddy water to the sidewalk and roadway along the Boulevard that eventually leads to the Higashi-Hiroshima campus. (Image 3)
  • The mountain behind the Gagara Faculty Housing (Building No. 4) had a landslide, and the muddy water has washed through the Gagara Road, running near the Higashi-Hiroshima campus. (Image 4)
  • Muddy water has flowed into the vicinity of the Ikenoue Student Dormitory and Yamanaka Ike (a name of Ppond). (Image 5)

[Kasumi and Higashi-Senda Campuses]
No damage has been reported so far.
