Carbon Therapy Facility at Gunma University Heavy Ion Medical center

現在、群馬大学で建設中の炭素線がん治療装置の概要と現状について述べる。本装置は、放射線医学総合研究所で顕著な医療効果が実証された重粒子線照射施設の普及型装置と位置付けられており、炭素イオンを核子当り最大400MeVにまで加速し、水換算飛程で最大25cmの性能を有する。この施設は、単に炭素線を用いたがん治療を行うだけでなく、総合病院としての特性を活かして炭素線治療の新たな展開を目指すものである。
Construction of new carbon therapy facility is in the final stage at Gunma-University Heavy Ion Medical Center, GHMC. The maximum energy of accelerated carbon ions is designed to be 400 MeV/u so that residual range exceeds 25 cm in water. The detailed design of the facility is based on design and R&D studies performed at National Institute of Radiological Sciences. The facility has three treatment rooms and one more for future developments. After the completion of construction, beam tests will be started in 2009.
